BOOGIE WOOGIE
COLLECTION (5CD)
REVIEW
The barrelhouse style is marked by a flexible approach to materials.
While the familiar boogie woogie bass figures of the standing bass and
walking bass are often used, other figures like the ragtime bass and
pounded chords were also used. And, unlike boogie woogie, these
patterns changed frequently during the course of a piece. (score
survey of patterns used in Barrelhouse Man) While boogie woogie and
barrelhouse grew out of the same tradition, barrelhouse retained the
sound of country blues as well as a “low down” feel.
